Dramatic things

This research project, led by Nazli Cila and developed in collaboration with Janna van Grunsven and Luciano Cavalcante Siebert, explores the emergence of value conflicts in the smart home. Specifically, it speculates about possible scenarios where smart products engage in (dramatic) negotiations among themselves and with people, because governed by different values (e.g., sustainability, comfort, wellbeing, security). The investigation revolves around improvisation sessions with professional actors that were asked to display different negotiation and conflict management behaviors (e.g., avoiding, competition, collaboration, accommodation, compromise). Through these, we aim at anticipating emerging scenarios, as well as at imagining potential means for resolving specific value conflicts.

The project is funded by the Delft Design for Values Institute Open Subsidy Program.
